EMILY & JASON: ENGAGEMENT

It was back when I was in University and I had just met this cute guy in one of my second year classes.  We were about to go on our first date in a few days and I was telling one of my roommates how excited I was about it.  She was a bit older and had been on the dating scene much longer…so, naturally,  I asked her for advice!  “Take note of his friends”, she told me.  “His friends?” I asked, obviously needing some clarification!  “Who someone chooses to be friends with says a lot about a person.  If you like his friends…then you’ll probably like him!”  Hmmm…interesting theory, I thought.  As it turned out, his friends had the maturity of a doorknob and it wasn’t long before my cute date followed suit.  My roommate was right and I’ve kept this advice tucked away in the back of my mind ever since.

Now, over a decade after first receiving this advice, I’ve come to learn that it applies to just about anyone that you meet in life…not just boys!  If you come across someone new…and they have great friends and great family…then it’s pretty safe to say that you are in great company!  The people in our life become pretty accurate reflections of the type of people that we are…so it’s important to choose wisely!

So when I finally made it into downtown Toronto to meet up for the first time with Emily and Jason, it certainly didn’t come as a surprise to me that they were completely awesome.  They are – after all – friends with Erinn and Ian, one of my couples from last summer.  And let’s be honest…those two simply oozed awesomeness from day one!  Hence, spending the afternoon with Emily and Jason felt like second nature…as though we’d always been friends.  With my camera and I being the perpetual third wheel, of course!

In all seriousness though, few things come as more of an honour to me than booking clients who have been recommended by past clients.  As a photographer and business owner, I always hope to surround myself with the type of clients that you are proud to know and proud to work with.  The type of couples that, one day, when someone asks “what does your business say about you?”…I can simply reply “take note of my clients!”  because they are my best references…not just the body of work that follows.

Emily and Jason, I am deliriously excited about your wedding day!  I still can’t believe that I have to wait another six months before it gets here!  But if your engagement shoot was any indication at all…then I’m quite certain that it’s going to be well worth the wait!

  5. […] Emily and Jason had the most eloquent words to say to their parents on their wedding night.  As I stood there, standing against the railing, taking it all in, I was so moved by the essence of who these two adults came to be.  They thanked their parents for maintaining that fine balance that is raising children – providing them with everything they need to grow…while giving them the space needed to be themselves.  It’s not an easy accomplishment to attain but it’s one that was clearly achieved at this moment in time.
