Sometimes, the best thing we need is to just let go…to unleash…to escape who we are.

When I was growing up, I didn’t often feel like I fit in too much.  I was quiet…I was introverted…I was self-conscious.  But on Halloween…I was just like everyone else.  On Halloween…we were all figures hovering in the shadows.  On Halloween…we were all somebody else!

On some level, I think that my Mom understood this about me.  She understood that – sometimes – I just wanted to blend in.  And as a result, she did everything she could to make Halloween an incredibly memorable time for me.  She would spend a month making my costume…she would decorate our house – regardless of how big or small it was at the time – to be the most beautiful place in the neighborhood…and she’d spend hours with me watching scary movies!

I often think that Halloween was my Mother’s labour of love.  Just because she could.

Now, as a parent myself, I love Halloween more than ever.  It’s adorable…it’s exciting…it’s a time to create our own traditions.  But I still find a piece of myself wanting to let go a bit…to unleash…to escape!!

The difference now is that I don’t feel on the outside anymore.  I don’t need to blend into the shadows or be like everyone else.  The difference now is that it’s my imagination that wants to let loose and break free.

So the idea began…

It started with the cover of a magazine one afternoon as I walked through the grocery store.  Something as simple as a cake.  From there, it grew into a need to step out of the shadows.  So we decided to host a Halloween party.  Formal.  Outside.  In a field.  Because why do things the easy way when you can unleash and escape convention!

Four exceptional friends…more fun than I ever dreamed possible…and an image or two to show for it.

As the leaves crumbled beneath our feet…as the clouds rolled in around us…as the sky darkened into night…that’s when I realized it had become our own labour of love.
