NATISA & MATT: ENGAGEMENT

It was July of 2007.  My birthday, actually.

Steve and I had been married for two years and at the time, we were living in our 640 square foot apartment on the top floor of an old house.  We loved our apartment.  It had character…it had style…and it also retained heat in the summer like nobody’s business!

It was about forty degrees on this particular day and had been for about a week.  We had bought a little window air conditioner that was installed in our bedroom but, at those temperatures, it really didn’t do much.  So we opted to salvage our sleep by closing our bedroom door and hoping to keep at least the one space in our apartment comfortable.

I suppose that given it was my birthday…we could have eaten out that night…or gone to see a movie…all in air conditioned spaces!  But I loved being home…and I loved celebrating my birthday at home.  So that’s what we did!  We ordered pizza, bought an ice cream cake, hooked up the television on top of our dresser and set up shop in our bedroom for the night!  We rented the movie Borat that night; a wildly inappropriate film that was so offensive you hardly knew what to do with yourself!

And the thing of it is…that it’s not really a movie you can watch with just anyone!  There’s a lot of “sensitive” issues that arise over the course of that two hours and in the midst of it…you could easily find yourself being judged!  Trust me, I judged myself through most of it!  But all the while, Steve and I laughed at all the same places.  We buried our head in pillows during all the same moments of complete discomfort.  We even needed to pause the movie at all the same times because we were so busy catching our breath that we were missing the next scene.

And that – right there – is when you know you’re a good match with someone.  When you can sit through Sasha Baron Cohan at his most offensive…and not judge the other person for laughing at it…that’s when you know that the two of you are going to get along just fine!

To this day…it remains one of my favourite birthdays ever!

So, needless to say that when the topic of Borat came up during my engagement session with Natisa and Matt, a little place inside of me began to leap with joy.  Because frankly, couples who get you…like, really get you.  On a Borat level kind of get you.  Well, they just don’t come along all that often!

Natisa and Matt, I’m so stoked for your big day because – you know – you and I…we get along just fine!!
