LINDSAY & AARON: ENGAGEMENT

Two weeks after Steve and I started dating…one of his grandmothers died.

I remember waving goodbye to him as he drove away for the funeral and the sound of his voice when he later called me from his parent’s home.  It was a hard time for him.  It was a hard time for his whole family.

I was sad to have never met her…but often times, I feel like I know her.  By the stories that are told around the dinner table…the crocheted artwork hanging on the walls…the house that still stands along the dirt road.  All of these things keep her alive in everyone that knew her.

Steve took me to her old house once.  He held my hand and walked me around the property.  He showed me the tree that he used to climb…the gardens that used to grow…the ditch that he once fell in.  I could picture him as a little boy running through the grass and scraping up his knees.  In so many ways…it’s just like going home.

Aaron can relate to this.

He has that same tree…those same stories…that same place that feels like home.

After weeks of going back and forth with Lindsay trying to find the perfect place to shoot their engagement session, she finally emailed one day with the suggestion of visiting Aaron’s grandmother’s house…a beautiful piece of property that – although she is gone – keeps her very much alive.

As we roamed the grounds – the sun setting all around us – Aaron told me stories about growing up there…the trouble he caused…the memories he has.  And in those moments, I felt so lucky to be there.  So lucky to be sharing in such history…in such a relationship…and of course, in such amazing stories soon to come.

Life can be so full of uncertainty sometimes…so full of change…so full of decisions.

And that’s why is also so comforting to know that – in the midst of it all – there is always home….
