Did you ever have to do improvisation when you were in high school?  Where everyone sits around starring while two people throw all their cares to wind and make up a random script??  It never failed…every drama class or team building activity I’ve ever had to do involved this exercise and I absolutely despised it.  I used to sit as far back as I could…preferably tucked away in a corner…in desperate hopes that I would never be called upon to pick up where someone else left off!

Aside from the fact that I never liked being put on the spot…I always just assumed that I wouldn’t be good at it.  I’m a planner by nature.  My life is made up of a world filled with post-it notes and to-do lists.  I like to be organized and I like to know what to expect.  This is who I am and this is what works for me.  So improvising anything just goes against everything I know to be true!  The very thought of it makes me cringe in terror!

The day of Genevieve and Aaron’s wedding day was stifling.  It was about forty-four degrees with a hundred percent humidity.  It was the kind of day that wraps you up in a suffocating blanket of air and makes even the simple act of breathing challenging and tedious.  Our initial plan of doing pictures outside was being foiled and it was clear that for the comfort of everyone involved [myself included]…we would need to make a new plan.  Or in other words, we would need to improvise!

Wedding days seldom ever go exactly as planned…but doing a complete location overhaul because of the heat isn’t a situation that I come across very often.  But – as the saying goes – there is a first time for everything!

Thanks to the amazingly accommodating people at the Arc.The Hotel, we were well on our way to finding the perfect alternative!  They happily opened up their gorgeous hotel for us to use and before long, we found ourselves tucked away in corners…photographing between fellow guests…and bringing improvisation to a whole new level!

Genevieve and Aaron, you were such a delight to have in front of my camera and you were such unbelievable troopers when Mother Nature dealt us a rather tumultuous hand!

You were patient…you were beautifully photogenic…and at the end of the day, you taught me that I may not have been so bad at improvisation after all!!
