Steve and I celebrate our ten year anniversary in a couple of months.  Crazy!  I don’t feel like a decade has gone by since our wedding day.  I don’t feel like we are ten years older.  I don’t feel that much has happened.  But that much has happened!  We’ve traveled around the world…we’ve had children…we’ve built homes.  We’ve been wrapped in joy and loss and fear and triumph.

And I’m starting to realize that that’s how marriage can so often be tallied.  Not so much in what you’ve done or where you’ve gone…but in what you’ve experienced.  The spectrum of human emotion is vast and plenty…and the more you live through those experiences with another person…the more it can never be taken away from you.  Because marriage isn’t just about experiencing life with someone else…it’s also about witnessing someone else’s life.

When I consider what we’ve gone through in ten years together…I can’t even fathom what it will be like another decade from now.  I wonder how those experiences will show on our faces and in the way we hold hands.  I wonder how it will show in the way we look out at the world and then look back at each other.  I wonder if it will have raised us up or beaten us down.

Today, is Barbara and Scott’s 25th wedding anniversary.  Twenty-five years!  And they have those experiences together and they’ve bared witness to another person’s life and they still hold hands!

And when I wonder what over twenty years spent alongside another person will look like…I hope that it looks even half as good as this…
